How to reset the keychain password on an Apple Mac computer

At times the Keychain password will become out of sync with your Mac password for whatever reason. Once this has happened there will be annoying pop ups that randomly come up prompting you to enter the keychain password.

This can be extremely confusing for most users because typically that password or the old password is unknown.

The solution is to simply reset the keychain password. The apparent disadvantage is that it deletes all the passwords saved in the keychain, but the advantage is one doesn’t have continuously annoying workflow issues with random password pop ups.

To reset the keychain password on an Apple Mac computer:

  1. In the Keychain Access app  on your Mac, choose Keychain Access > Preferences.
  2. Click Reset My Default Keychain.
  3. In the Finder on your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Log Out. When you log in again, save your current login password in a keychain.
