Web design versus web hosting
Vander Host is purely a web hosting company. We don’t create websites, also known as web(site) development or web design. We focus all our professional efforts on server hosting, website hosting, WordPress hosting and the running of our data centres. This leaves little time to do anything else. Vander Host exclusively recruits staff who have disciplines in web hosting and related technologies, which is a lot different from a web design business. In fact, we also have a large number of web designers using our services as resellers. This means that from a business perspective, it doesn’t make sense to also offer web design services.
Can Vander Host refer me to web designers?
Short answer? Yes! Through the years in the web hosting industry we’ve encountered a lot of professionals who design websites. This means we have a strong referral network. We like to keep the momentum going with business, so if we are approached about web design, we call on our referral network.
Where do I start?
For newcomers to web design, it’s important to orientate yourself with the process. Creative and technical people in digital (web) design work well with clients when they know what the budget and site specifics are. If you had to ask a builder: “How much does it cost to build a house?”. The short answer would be: “How long is a piece of string?”
Variables would include:
- Where are you going to build it?
- How many floors?
- What kind of fittings?
- Etc etc. (You get the picture.)
Budget is a key factor in web design
It’s important for clients to pin down their budget for creating a website (unless you have an infinite budget), and discuss this with the appointed web designer to ascertain if your expectations can be met within that amount. You need to be specific and transparent, otherwise the project won’t be a success. Same as building a house.
I mean, let’s be real: You can’t build a house in Clifton, if you have a budget for a house in Caledon. So one has to match expectations. It doesn’t mean you won’t have a successful website, it just means you might not be able to get all the ‘bells and whistles’ you see on some other websites.
Moving forward with creating a website
Vander Host is happy to engage with our clients and prepare them when approaching potential web designers, i.e. what wording to use, what certain technical terms mean, etc. It can be quite daunting as a first timer.
